The working principle of radar level sensors is based on the concept of time domain reflection (TDR). In essence, these sensors operate by emitting an electromagnetic pulse that travels along a cable or probe, at the speed of light.
When the electromagnetic pulse encounters the surface of the measured medium that is being monitored, a portion of the pulse is reflected back towards the transmitter of the radar level meter, along the same path it traveled. The time taken for the pulse to travel in both directions is then measured and used to calculate the distance between the transmitter and the surface of the measured medium.
Based on the time-of-flight of the pulse, the radar level sensor can determine and calculate the height of the level being monitored. This information is then sent to the connected monitoring or control system for analysis and decision making based on the specific application requirements.
